Night walkers

OK it’s night WORKERS but I had to get your attention some how, you see I hate Crochet Widower’s job, I know it’s an important job and that someone has to do it but I hate it.

Crochet Widower works nights in a nursing home, I don’t mean lates, I mean NIGHTS. He leaves the house at 6pm, an hour before The Hellions’ bedtimes start, and gets home at just after 7am, about an hour after The Hellions wake up. If, by some miracle his shifts are next to each other he will go to bed when he gets home and wake up just in time for us to get back from the school run at 4 ish. This isn’t too bad when you break it down as he only works 2 or three shifts a week so if they are on a Monday and a Tuesday it works quite favourably for being driven to my LYS for yarn

Monday

11am wake up, rest of the day to himself

6pm off to work

Busy busy busy

Tuesday

7.30am bedtime

4pm up and about, eat, get dressed

6pm off to work

Wednesday

7.30 bedtime

11am wake up

Normal sleep pattern, waking times ’till next shift. OK I can’t vacuum while he is asleep and our bedroom is in serious need of a clean most of the time but 4 days, 2 of which mostly child free, to get the DIY and car related things done is quite good.

Unfortunately, this back to back shift arrangement is rare Mostly there will be days in-between so;

Monday

11am wake up, rest of the day to himself

6pm off to work

Busy busy busy

Tuesday

7.30am bedtime

11am up and at them

get on with stuff

Wednesday

11am wake up, rest of the day to himself

6pm off to work

Busy busy busy

Thursday

7.30am bedtime

11am up and at them

get on with stuff

THAT leaves one child free day and the weekend, the fun really starts if he is working over the weekend I then have to find ways to keep The Hellions out/quiet for the day, and don’t get me started on school holidays.

SO far this is just inconvenient and “get on” able but, for some reason the night staff are not allowed to have regular shifts, they can not work the same two days, back to back, every week, days can from what I hear but not nights, so my OCD has a temper tantrum that I can not make plans to do XYZ on the same day each week, I can not rely on the weekly shop getting done on the same day because that is Crochet Widower’s job (he drives, I don’t) I can not make plans for weekly evening activities because I might have to miss weeks if Crochet Widower is working.

Then we have sleep, or rather don’t, Crochet Widower actually gets more sleep than I do, I do not sleep well when he is at work, I like to know where all my family are when I sleep and when he is working Crochet Widower could be in danger from;

earthquakes (we are in the UK you know)

tornadoes (I know)

axe murders (yep)

gas clouds (well he CAUSES enough of them)

falling aeroplane engines (you HAVE seen Donnie Darko right?)

blood clots (all of them)

I think I even got as far as accidental death by coffee one night, couple this stressing with the fact that one of my medications has the side effect of vivid… erm… odd dreams and I doze all night when Crochet Widower is working, this in turn leads me to needing an early night when he is home (and not in the fun adult way either).

Crochet Widower COULD get another job, he could get one relatively easily to be fair, but he is lazy (it’s part of his draw to be fair, too lazy to argue 😉 ). Now, he does work hard at his job, but, finding, applying for, and interviewing for a new job is just too much like hard work.

I know, I should be thankful that he has a job and that I can stay at home to look after The Hellions and grow my crochet portfolio. But I am an entitled princess and things all my own way *foot stamp*.

  1. Hi Sweetie! I was a CERTIFIED NURSES AIDE for many years almost 20! I raised my hellion boys on my own part of those years remarried and had a 3rd hellion son but I was still like a single parent for 10 years not a good marriage at all! Tried to go back to school and my awful now x tried everything to make our lives miserable! I worked the late night shift and all shifts or part of some shifts to help with patients that only preferred me! Then 1 day my oldest had to carry me out of the bathroom for my back had finally given out after fighting with it for 13 years to not go out! I’m now married for 3 years to a wonderful man of my dreams who we both knew when we met we were soul mates! My sons adore him they are now 23, 21, and 15! They at times get frustrated more now because of my disability than before but I know they understand! I can only do very little before my back wears out and I am back in bed crocheting to relax! When I met my soul mate 9 years ago he was my ANGEL and still is! Unfortunately his job messed his back up as well 4 years ago and with age it for both of us our backs can only let us do very little! I have FIBROMYALGIA and other problems and my husband has beginning of arthritis and pulled discs in his back! You will make it through and are doing great with your little ones! Cherish the moments that you all have now and even later! I was only 34 when my back gave out on me, so it has been 10 years since my back finally gave out started 23 years ago! Hang in there SWEETIE! You are AMAZING as so is all of your family including the hellions! I love to hear or read about all your adventures with them! Thanks Manda!
