Mostly this is a rant about how some people use and perceive Facebook but the lessons can be applied to all social media.
I am talking about THIS
Of coarse FB doesn’t show all of the posts of all of the pages you like to you, be reasonable. I like 942 pages, as a page I like to make 3 posts a day, if the pages I like post like I do that would be 2,826 posts to read A DAY, that along with your friends posts is a lot of reading before we even get in to twitter, google+ or pintrest. So FB’s computer stalks you and notices if you mostly interact with photos, or plain text posts, or if a hand full of words grab your attention and targets you with that sort of post.
It is not complaining about FB that bothers me, I do it myself, it is the unimaginative, uninspired copying/sharing of these like farming photos that I don’t want to see (and you have to be a pretty important page for me not to unlike you on sight of one of these photos), but if you want to be seen you need to put the work in. This sort of complaining is rather like sticking a poster to a lamp post and complaining when the lamp post doesn’t go out of it’s way to make people look at it.
This post was popular for a few reasons; 1) is has some rather lovely images attached, 2) it was posted directly to my wall, 3) I promised the pattern would be published in 19 likes people shared this post (more on shares in a moment)
I made a vital error with this post, I uploaded it directly to an album, when you do this people see the photo but because FB posts as “ItchyCrochet posted a new photo to the album patterns” they click like and comment on the ALBUM.
You need to remember that “# people saw this” is NOT the same as how many news feeds you have shown up in, for the stats to go up for a given post people need to actually click, be it for a closer look at a photo, to read the rest of the text (you know “see more”), to like, or to comment. Now shared posts are bad for your reach as a page but may get you new likers, when you share a post FB will show your version of it to fewer people than the original, for one obvious reason, think about how many time one of those funny pages has shared a photo then you see it 100 in your news feed, THAT is not what any one wants in their news feed. Also a shared post when clicked (rather than commented or liked) will send people to the original post not your page.
OK, last bit, links. Yes it is true that FB does not show links to as many people, FB is now a business so they do not really want to send people off site if they don’t have to, and THAT is the point. FB is free, making a page is free, posting is free, as my most popular post shows reaching the majority of your likers is free, but you can not expect someone else to do the work.
What are you more likely to want to look at in more detail
If you want posts to be seen on FB be engaging, put descriptions on your photos, tell a story, ask a question, do all three, but don’t complain that no one looks at your posts when all you post is that no one looks at your posts.
